Heat from the sun is constantly warming our planet. An air, ground or water heat pump is an electric eco heating system that absorbs this solar heat either from the air, earth or water. The heat pump then uses a small amount of electricity to compress this heat into a suitably high temperature ready to be used for space heating and hot water.
Providing the system is designed and installed correctly, a ground or air source heat pump can be an effective eco heating system that’s both cheap to run and that’s good for the environment. Modern heat pumps can last as long as 25 years. This could see a large proportion of the initial cost returned to you over a period of 7 years.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AIR AND GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS?
Air source heat pumps convert heat from the air to energy while ground source heat pumps draw heat from the earth. Each has their own merits so there is no clear winner in terms of which is best.
Heat pumps are considered one of the most efficient eco heating systems available today, because they don’t give off any carbon emissions locally and they’re capable of transferring over 4 times more thermal energy than they use in electricity.
DO HEAT PUMPS WORK ON ISLAND?
You may be wondering if heat pumps can work effectively on the Island in our cooler climate. In actual fact, all types of heat pump can absorb heat even in very cold conditions (as low as -20°C). They’re already found in many domestic applications throughout Europe, and in much colder climates than our own. In Sweden alone, 97% of new builds come with a heat pump system, and over 20% of all households already have heat pumps installed as an eco heating system.
Reduced electricity bills are a key benefit from adding solar panels. Many customers also like the independence created by not having to depend solely on the grid for your energy needs. But the key benefits of solar green energy is its impacts on our environment.
Samsung's heat pumps can reduce your running costs by up to 30% compared to a standard gas boiler system due to their exceptional efficiency. Most are at least 350% efficient i.e. you put 1kW of electricity in and you could receive 3.5kW of energy out.
Installing a heat pump will require the installation or replacement of your existing hot water cylinder if you want hot water as well as space heating. Cylinders for heat pumps tend to be a bit larger than for normal heating systems as you will store the water at slightly lower temperatures, therefore you need to store more of it. Air source systems also need a buffer tank but the some systems can cleverly fits this into the hot water cylinder, reducing the floor space required.
With the IoM Govt committing to cut carbon emissions by 2050 electric cars are going to be more and more prevalent on our Island. As such EV Chargers are becoming a need to have rather than a luxury item in new builds and house refurbishments.
UFH has moved on so much and being able to use low-profile systems that can be retrofitted, with minimal disruption to the floor they make installation of a UFH system an simple and clean way of adding UFH to your home.
Not only will a smart thermostat enable you to monitor your heating and reduce your energy bills, but you’ll also be able to do all that at the touch of button anywhere in the world. You set the temperatures you want and then enjoy the warmth of your home safe in the knowledge that you are efficiently using your heating system.
